| Review (Summary): "The Ricoh R8 is the latest version in Ricoh's regularly updated series of 7x zoom digital cameras. Offering the same versatile 28-200mm focal length as its predecessor, the most significant change to the new R8 is the increase from 8 to 10 megapixels. Other important new features include a large 2.7-inch, 460,000-pixel HVGA LCD, 1:1 aspect square format function, a minimum aperture function which increases the depth of field, and a complete external redesign with a much more "retro" look. ...
... So why, you may well ask, has the Ricoh R8 only earned our Recommended award, despite scoring 5 in two areas? There's one big problem with this camera - noisy images. We thought the R7 had finally cracked Ricoh's long-standing problems with noise at slow ISO speeds, delivering good results between 64-400. Sadly the R8, with its increased resolution of 10 megapixels, takes a clear backwards step, with noise and blurring of detail evident at the relatively slow speed of ISO 200. ..." |

| Review (Summary): "The R8 comes as an upgrade to the R7, itself launched a mere six months ago. The new model constitutes only a fairly minor upgrade. The key changes are the new, slightly boxier design, the inevitable increase in megapixels (from eight to ten) and a larger 2.7" screen which now has an impressive resolution of 460,000 pixels. The 28-200mm equiv. zoom and 3rd generation Smooth Imaging Engine have been carried over from the predecessor. ...
... I can honestly say that I very much enjoyed using the Ricoh R8 while working on this review but I'll also quote Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who once wrote: 'There is strong shadow where there is much light'. So, if you are thinking about purchasing an R8 I recommend you make an effort and read this entire review to make sure the camera matches your requirements and does not shade your photographic ventures with one of its shortcomings. ..." |

| Review (Summary): "The new retro styling of the Ricoh R8 has a feeling of traditional mixed with contemporary. A bit like finding a Starbucks in a church. ...The basic rectangular shape has a zoom lens on the front that's not only huge in performance, but also in physical appearance. I know that 7x optical isn't the largest zoom in the world, I reviewed the Olympus SP-570 a few days ago and that has a 20x optical, but for the size of the body, a zoom this big is pretty good. ...
... It's just a shame that the performance isn't up to scratch. I reported that the images have a look like they're over sharpened giving a painted look. I think this may now be down to the noise that the sensor generates. ..." |

| Review (Summary): "... The R8 was launched at the end of February, and has already stirred up an unusual amount of interest among the photographic press. Looking at the R8 this isn't too surprising, because it's certainly an eye-catching camera and has an outstanding specification. Although in terms of features and specification it is only an incremental upgrade of the R7, with the same 28-200mm-equivalent zoom lens but now featuring a 10-megapixel sensor, it has a completely new body with a very distinctive style. ...
... Most other 10-megapixel compact cameras use the larger 1/1.8-inch or 1/1.7-inch sensor size, however Ricoh has squeezed an extra two megapixels onto the same small 1/2.3-inch size CCD as the R7. While this does give larger pictures and potentially better detail resolution, it has a costly trade-off in color depth and dynamic range (the ability to capture both shadow and highlight detail in the same shot) and also increased image noise. ..." |
